07/07/2007 - Four Counties League Division 3

Shenley Church End CC - 107-2 (25 points) BEAT
New Bradwell CC 2nd XI - 104 (2 points) by 8 wickets
Finally confirming their status at the top of Division Three, Shenley capped off another dominant performance by bowling out New Bradwell 2nds and gallantly knocking off the runs to become new leaders - after Open University's failure to win.

Their sixth victory in the past 8 league games (including postponements) is easily the Club's best looking season to date, and with a core team of around 12 or 13 players developing as the season progresses, a 22 point lead with a game in hand give Shenley a dominant position in last third of the campaign.

New Bradwell put themselves into bat on a green wicket which still surprisingly carried bounce at times. Drying out during the week had helped, though one or two low bounces helped Shenley to early wicket of Shafiq, Joel Langley and Graham Stanford.

Alan Bridgeman played some nice shots to score 19 before Jon Pennells caught him out in the deep, inches short of the boundary. Bradwell continued to slide, with LBW decisions and more catches coming the way, Graham Teagle profiting greatly.

He notched an impressive 4-16 off 8.3 overs, the spinner bowling 24 consecutive dot balls at the end of his spell. Along with Anton DeBeer and Jay Fletcher (2 wickets apiece), the visiting side were restricted to 104 from 31.4 overs.

An easily achievable score from the 56 overs allocated to SCECC, and so it proved to be. Taking their time - reaching 50 on 18 overs - the openers Andy Peacock and Homer Evans usual solid start was broken by a strange LBW decision, Peacock sent on his way as the ball hit the top of his pad 3 yards out his ground.

Colin Wayman then partnered Evans (out for 29 caught slip) and subsequently Anton DeBeer to shepherd the side to the low total, hitting a cool 33 to claim the 25 points from 30.4 overs. Shafiq bowled best, claiming 1-7 from 3 overs.

Steeple Claydon and Eggington form the next two matches, both sides struggling in Division. There will be no complacency from Shenley though, who hope to extend their lead further as the close of July draws nearer.
